Reducing the size of the MASSIVE PDF

i have made artwork in illustrator (included image of below). newspaper print. when export illustator pdf size massive 40mb! sent them via link hoping away replied & said please send 3mb file big! going now? have flatterened transparency & rasterized in illy makes larger.untitled-1.jpg

any muchly appreciated asap!!

make sure turn off "preserve illustrator editing" on pdf options, embeds entire ai file inside pdf. given destination i'd them use pdf/x-1a:2001 preset flatten transparency , ensure everything's in cmyk.

 

the default raster resolution of 300dpi perfect commercial printing, newsprint tends run lower-quality; if can't 300dpi file small enough ask paper resolution require (150, 100, etc.) , change pdf export settings match.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
