"Eroded" text look

hello,

 

i have project features before , after of website design, , create appealing text intro.  ideally text 3d ray traced text, , "before" have eroded, crumbled look.  in contrast "after" have cleaner look.  thoughts on how create eroded effect, maybe peices falling off of text?  guys.

this sounds job true 3d application , not ae.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
