Thread: Graphics problem: stuck at 640x480

i'm trying set computer work. have no control on hardware; need set run windows xp in vm, , has off network, updates beyond on installation cd need downloadable , installable usb stick or cd.

computer has following graphics:
intel corporation 82845g/gl[brookdale-g]/ge chipset integrated graphics device (rev 03)

monitor nec lcd 175m capable of 1280x1024

i've tried both 11.04 , 11.10 today, , neither give me 640x480.

when try the preferences - display cannot change resolution, cannot detect monitor...

tried creating xorg.conf file.

code:
section "monitor" identifier "nec 175m-bk" horizsync 39-75 vertrefresh 56-75 endsection section "screen" identifier "default screen" monitor "nec 175m-bk" device "configured video device" defaultdepth 24 subsection "display" viewport 0 0 depth 24 modes "1280x1024" endsubsection endsection
"driver can't support depth 24"

changed defaultdepth , depth 16 , tried again.
x server started, 640 x 480 resolution.

looked in /var/log/xorg.0.log , found list of "supported established timings" including
1024x768@60hz
1024x768@70hz
1024x768@75hz
1280x1024@75hz
also, monitor identified nec lcd175m , serial number correct...

don't understand what's going on here; why xorg log can identify monitor, yet gui cannot...

ideas?

k.

is intel driver loading, paste xorg.log in pastebin if want @ it.
