Thread: Problem with nvidia graphics card

new ubuntu.

opened menu of programs open on startup. there 2 -- startup noise , nvidia settings. opened nvidia settings , said needed run nvidia xconfig in terminal , reset. ran in terminal, same message appeared every time opened nvidia settings.

when closed notebook on system didn't turn off , screen subsequently blank, ended having hold power button.

when turned on, ubuntu wouldn't run normally. dual boot, grub launch ubuntu 3.0.0-14-generic. launches screen saying modem manager various things , starts various things -- 1 of fails: 'automatic crash report generation'. can't here, when press power button (not holding it) continues 'checking running unattended upgrades' -- 'terminating programs' fails , computer shuts down.

starting in recovery mode able command line input.

not sure need here, guess graphics card.

did work before installed nvidia drivers? if yes, remove nvidia drivers , use open source drivers. problem drivers not open source , nvidia able change them, can take long time.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
