Thread: RAID1 Driver

after numerous problems running windows 7 ultimate , ubuntu 11.04 on dual-booting workstation, decided abandon microsoft altogether since had retired while , had no further need heavy-duty engineering software had been running years. in addition that, wife had been running ubuntu since version 6.04 , happy it. since using rig serious writing , related illustrating, waved bye-bye uncle billy , signed on ubuntu.

workstation has pair of 1tb wd drives in raid1 mirror promise technology fasttrak tx2300 pci controller. gave no problems after wiped windows 7 drives , expanded partitioning entire 900-plus capacity, minus 12gb swapfile. upgrade 11.10 went through without problems, recent update of 119 files caused boot problems. attempts correct booting using boot repair disk killed altogether, , wiped array clean install , in business.

problem can't rebuild raid1 mirror. disks wiped clean, , when try partition array, gparted keeps telling me can't format drives 1 of them in use. trying them 1 @ time yields result no matter 1 try. guess because system has work through promise controller access drives can't process them either or separately. driver have windows, , drives apparently don't play nice ubuntu without driver.

able download linux driver promise tx2300 raid controller, source code written red hat , suse, , instructions compiling don't work in ubuntu. i'm mechanical engineer worked in electronics, , build own computers, have little experience programming or software. can 1 or more of folks explain how adapt promise driver suse ubuntu?

url promise download is: http://firstweb.promise.com/support/...ory=all&os=100 , link file is: fasttrak tx2300/4300 linux partial source code. can upload driver package if help. thank time , attention query.

i have no idea controller, 1 option using ubuntu software raid since use ubuntu on system. i'm not sure if have take performance hit option compared promise. software raid better bios raid, not sure compared dedicated controller.

benefit in opinion tomorrow can plug of disks in computer , able data, 1 disk raid1. because os raid.

1 idea if want give promise go is:
both ubuntu desktop cd (live cd) , alternate install cd (you use raid installs , might offer support more controllers desktop cd).
first boot standard cd live mode, , in terminal try rid of raid meta data on disks:
sudo dmraid -e -r /dev/sda
sudo dmraid -e -r /dev/sdb

note: destroy data on array/disks.

after should clean might give controller bios/menu go @ creating new raid1 array.

if works, ubuntu install use alternate cd because has raid support, opposed standard cd can used fails install bootloader on raid array.

if decide go softraid option, again alternate cd can install it. again need destroy raid meta data disks first , disable controller, in fact plug disks directly on motherboard. os create raid1 array , package used called mdadm.
