Thread: Re-install Using Downloaded apt pkgs or Fix Upgrade?
hi all,
firstly, i'd mention ubuntu forums amazing source of information , take hat off contribute.
points note before begin:
- you using ubuntu 11.04 - natty narwhal
- i'm using laptop, drivers compatible
- it has ati card, hence additional drivers needed
- i used following posts recovery options:
[all variants] graphics resolution- upgrade /blank screen after reboot (to recover startup hang @ "battery stats" etc) google, discovered option 'nomodeset' helped me , got every post, blog , random tweet!
i'm writing ubuntu 11.4 upgrade. upgraded via cmd line 10.4 10.10 editing /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades , using apt-get. ~777mb's. please note i'm severely limited in bandwidth , rather upset that, after lot of research still had move release release ~1.4gb's instead of 10.4 11.4. if went wrong way please enlighten me!
10.4 10.10 upgrade successful including bootup pre-existing ati drivers.
upgrade 10.10 11.04 done via package update manager , installed without errors. encountered grub problems , ati driver issues failing fallback graphics , startup hangs. workaround using 'nomodeset' , following mafoelffen's gfx sticky. took me night, because doing same thing on , over, expecting different result. needed rollback kernel on each reboot , use nomodeset etc after of mafoelffen's instructions.
had working unity desktop , full gpu support, not happy had use kernel parameters. didn't feel clean. make me pedantic?
anyways, after ignoring einstein's quotecarried on playing.insanity: doing same thing on , on again , expecting different results.
now, don't need use nomodeset , have latest ati drivers per mafoelffen's post. have however, lost unity , @ gnome version: 2.32.1. style option correctly set on ubuntu login.
phew, breathe , stay me guys.
brand new, first , install of ubuntu feels abused , i'm feeling reformat/reinstall in order. can't afford download 700mb iso should've been first choice had not had 10.04 iso. i've repackaged /var/cache/apt/archives folder using ubuntu article linked above , have moved ext. hdd.
to summarise: me fix current installation issues or make sure have repackaged update packages correctly reinstall?
i'm rather savvy centos cli not desktop gui's or debian (1st time). have fortunately haven't run major changes between deb , centos google hasn't solved me. i'm centos network admin please don't hold when explaining me. if don't understand mighty google help!
