Thread: VMware Workstation 8.0.1 / Player 4.0.1 kernel module compilation on oneiric (64bit)

hi all,

because spent hours getting d*mn piece of expensive junk compile kernel modules yesterday, thought might share result. please note patches might crude , wrong , take no responsibility if weird stuff happens because follow instructions , use them.

using 64 bit core i7 system stock kernel 3.0.0-14-generic here , failed find place on net posted solution software/hardware combo. feel free add 32bit experience thread; did not test work, too.

of course, existing install of vmware workstation or -player required, prior applying these instructions.

assume have basic knowledge of development tools , shell on linux , not elaborate further on process if don't. if guide you, please save time , don't post questions. i'd rather recommend complain loudly vmware , ask refund if bought license. after there virtualbox free , delivered one-click-installable , ready run on recent versions of ubuntu.

download attached file , following:

code:
cd /usr/lib/vmware/modules/ cp -a source source.backup cd source file in * tar xvf $file done
apply patch:

code:
zcat vmware-ws8.0.1-ubuntu11.10-oneiric.patch.gz | patch -p1
re-pack archives , rid of unpacked directories:

code:
for file in *-only tar cvf `basename $file -only`.tar $file done rm -rf *-only
should able build , load modules:

code:
 vmware-modconfig --console --install-all
good luck!
