Thread: Audio Card Not Recognized

my audio card (audigy sound blaster) noisy (it sounded scratchy record on windows xp got worse on ubuntu) bought cheap new startech 4ch card. when put in pci slot , booted up, system ceased acknowledge there sound card on board. swapped audigy functioned noisily before , wasn't recognized either. lived no sound several months, purchased startech usb sound adapter hoping quick, cheap fix. functions on xp laptop but, pci card, it's not recognized on machine.

unrecognized card first occurred on 10.04 , upgraded 10.10 same result. machine older dell dimension xps. both audigy card in pci slot , usb sound adapter plugged in this:

~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found...

read blacklisted drivers , checked system's blacklist. there items on there seem may related don't know if blacklist unique system or if it's universal each ubuntu version. ones caught eye were:

# snd_intel8x0m can interfere snd_intel8x0, doesn't seem support much
# hardware on own (ubuntu bug #2011, #6810)
blacklist snd_intel8x0m

# conflicts dvb driver (which better handling device)
blacklist snd_aw2

# replaced p54pci
blacklist prism54

# low-quality, noise when being used sound playback, causes
# hangs @ desktop session start (ubuntu: #246969)
blacklist snd_pcsp

# ugly , loud noise, getting on everyone's nerves; should done a
# nice pulseaudio bing (ubuntu: #77010)
blacklist pcspkr

last 1 sounded problem installed pulseaudio find no happy result.

looking in right places? should look?

little background on me:
switched ubuntu following hdd failure took xp os it. no budget windows disc, tried ubuntu , it. while i'm technically pretty competent , not afraid dig stuff, i'm not educated on things terminal commands , reading output ubuntu users seem be. hope can solve puzzle. searched forum , didn't find "no audio" post same "aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found" situation. if missed one, please post link me.

first i'd of 81 people looked @ , didn't type single keystroke. still don't know how driver blacklist compiled.

mod moved "general" "multimedia & video." didn't see section last night or else i'd have put there in first place. thinking maybe should have put "absolute beginner."

have audio. got on own. went synaptic, searched "audio" , installed find. caused pc boot terminal , had no clue do. think think of use usb 11.10 boot did , upgraded. fixed it. lost of e-mail , few programs @ least pc knows there 2 sound devices connected , sound comes out of them. i'm gonna try install classic gnome because saw thread on here somewhere while looking help.
