Thread: Can I create shortcuts to apps?
hello!
new ubuntu user. installed ubuntu 11.10 couple of days ago replace windows 7 on new computer , pleased.
dock on left edge of screen getting full of useful applications. tried solve placing folder in dock , shortcuts in folder. ubuntu won't allow me either.
applications available search in "dash home" requires me remember name of (perhaps used) applications. example, installed flashcard software called granula , touch typing tutor called klavaro. put shortcuts these applications in folder called "learning tolls", 3 libreoffice applications in folder called "libreoffice", games in folder called "games" , on. otherwise forget flashcard software called granula , have minesweeper play when i'm bored.
how solve problem in easy , intuitive way?
you can create own launchers making .desktop file.
see .desktop file looks open file browser , press ctrl+h show hidden files.
open folder .local/share/applications
can't open .desktop file clicking.
open gedit , drag , drop 1 of .desktop files it.
give idea of .desktop file looks like.
after creating .desktop file can drag launcher.
search how create .desktop file.
wouldn't bother because 1 of benefits of dash search don't need remember name of app.
eg...if wanted launch klavaro couldn't remember name,
entering in dash search "typing" or "tutor" or "touch" bring klavaro.
