Thread: trying to upgrade to 64-bit version

i've been on 32-bit version of 11.10 on 2 months 1g of memory. having problem running unity. unity 2d worked great development using eclipse running slow. memory cheap these days decided less expensive add memory opposed upgrading entire pc.

system has amd athlon 64 x2 dual-core processor, , added memory have upgrade 64-bit addressing in order access full 4gig of ram.

installed memory last night. system runs unity 3d , eclipse runs faster. still, access 3.6gig of memory using 32-bit version of ubuntu 11.10, decided bite bullet , upgrade. not looking forward reinstalling applications, in long-run knew worthwhile.

downloaded ubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64.iso image hard drive , used new 8g usb stick bought along memory create 64-bit usb boot image. when booted off usb stick monitor went snowy , system halted. reboot of hard drive since couldn't read screen.

there step missed in upgrade process?

first of double check integrity of usb .iso have created... if needed download .iso again , if possible use torrent download , follow instructions dot creating usb disk.
