Thread: Windows wifi stays up and works and Ubuntu drops out with video buffering problem
this fujitsu biblo loox netbook intel(r) core(tm)2 cpu u7600 @ 1.20ghz cpu, 2gb ram, 74gb hard disk, graphics mobile intel(r) 945 express chipset family 256mb memory. had windows vista installed , added ubuntu 10.04.03 lts make dual boot.
using firefox version 3.6.24 ubuntu , firefox version 3.0.19 windows vista. fetched ubuntu restricted extras codecs, flash etc.
netbook gets internet via virgin broadband , belkin router. router located on ground floor in extension @ of house , netbook used in room @ front on second floor, signal has go through original single-layer brick wall (now embedded in extension room), internal wall , ceiling.
using wifi windows vista works on netbook, wifi ubuntu stops video buffering problem , cursor spinning typically after 5 minutes. not recover , netbook has restarted. necessary go downstairs , restart router.
however, netbook wifi works fine near belkin router or anywhere on ground floor using ubuntu, problem may signal reaching netbook on second floor. there 2 other laptops in front room on second floor (same distance (15-20 meters router) , geometry), lenovo , fujitsu running windows xp , windows 7. wifi works fine these. have never had problems wired connection, think belkin router working.
netbook wife , younger members in family want use watching overseas news , movies via www.katambay.com. there 'special' site or clips shown?
q1. buffering problem caused data arriving faster netbook can handle (a data overflow problem) or there other causes too?
try hardware boosts signal netbook. there seem plenty of choices in online stores, don't know enough make selection or how use it. product?:
alfa awus036h 1000mw 1w 802.11b/g usb wireless wifi network adapter 5dbi antenna , suction cup window mount dock. see screnshot alpha1.jpg.
q2. used on second floor next netbook connected usb cable boosting/amplifying signal emitted belkin router on ground floor?, i.e. alfa gadget acts receiver antenna?
q3. customer reviews alfa works out of box linux.
can confirm this? other linux experiences device?
there more expensive alfa model includes 7 dbi antenna (screenshot alpha2.jpg).
q4. 7dbi antenna more powerful 5dbi antenna? if so, make difference in our case?

q5. significance of wattage? better reception? or better capability send data internet/router?
q6. there similar or better wifi booster alternatives?
