have ubuntu installed on laptop,although may change install later ( have separate thread open that

current problem laptop allows me boot usb stick , did have usb stick booting, , thought showing persistence. in fact when boot , in home folder have document created in there. think indicates @ least initialy had valid , working usb stick install.

gives warnings lack of room, , if instance try edit small text file red warning there no space.

writing message hdd installed ubuntu. try recreate bootable memory stick again live cd have,but thought ask because

  • there simple quick fix if knew doing
  • i figure out cause or solution rather blindly reinstall on usb

    more polite rtfm when user error cause of problems.

usb stick boot may have problem video settings, resolution apparently wrong, windows bigger screen windows, instance disk utility window, , although can drag sideways see info don't think drag upwards view bottom of it.but problem can @ later.

have no idea sort of info needed problem memory stick 16gb kingston formatted vfat. under impression original install involved having swap partition on it, although not sure see now. when put in laptop whilst hdd ubuntu running shows single volume of 16gb in disk utility.

or suggestions appreciated.

a typical persistent install uses file named casper-rw persistence.
limited 4gb due being fat32.
doing update fill it.
can delete file , make ext4 partition named casper-rw if need more persistence space.
update still not recommended.

option full install usb stick, act hard drive install.

following step step full install of 11.10 usb device, partition sizes given 8gb drive, adjust size suit, might want first partition 8gb can use drive storage , transfer windows machine:

turn off , unplug computer. (see note @ bottom)
remove side case.
unplug power cable hard drive.
plug computer in.
insert usb drive.
insert live cd or live usb.
start computer, cd / flash drive should boot, (you need adjust bios boot usb).
select language
select "forward".
select download updates while installing , select install third-party software.
(notice @ least 4.4 gb drive space required, 4gb bootable flash drive users must choose distro full install).
forward
if prompted unmount partitions.
select "something else"
forward
confirm "device boot loader installation:"is correct, (if left internal hdd plugged in make sure usb drive root selected - sdb not sdb1).
(optional windows data partition)
select "new partition table" click continue on drop down.
click "free space" , "add".
select "primary".
make "new partition size..." 1000
"location = beginning".
"use as: = fat32 file system"
, "mount point = windows".
select "ok"
click "free space" , "add".
select "primary", "new partition size ..." = 3 4 gb, beginning, ext4, , mount point = "/" ok.
(optional home partition)
click "free space" , "add".
select "primary", "new partition size ..." = 1 2 gb, beginning, ext2, , mount point = "/home" ok.
(optional swap partition)
click "free space" , "add".
select "primary", "new partition size ..." = remaining space, (1 2 gb), beginning , "use as" = "swap area" ok.
(importent)
confirm "device boot loader installation" points usb drive. default should ok if hdd unplugged.
click "install now".
select location.
forward.
select keyboard layout.
forward.
insert name, username, password, computer name , select if want log in automatically or require password.
selecting "encrypt home folder" option if worried loosing usb drive.
select forward.
wait until install complete.
turn off computer , enable hdd.
stick side panel on.

note:
may omit disabling hard drive if after partitioning choose install grub root of usb drive installing ubuntu to, (ie sdb not sdb1). cautious, many people have overwritten hdd mbr.
