Thread: What 'magic' is needed to play a movie with subtitles (when srt files exist)?

i have avi file , subtitle srt files movie won't show subtitles default totem movie player 2.30.2 on ubuntu , there no menu (that can find) in totem choose subtitles (english, french, german, etc.) play.

'magic' needed play movie subtitles?

here directory listing of available file structure:
./movie.avi <=== movie
./movie.idx
./movie.sub
./movie_srt/english.srt <=== these apparently subtitle files
./movie_srt/italian.srt
./movie_srt/french.srt
./movie_srt/german.srt

movie player wrong or file structure wrong or need make setting somewhere haven't made select subtitles show in playing of movie?

try downloading vlc , use subtitles there found easier use , ...

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
