PDF won't open in browser window - think it's Adobe, not FF

hello!  have windows 7, 64 bit, firefox 20.0.1 , internet explorer 9.0.8112.16421, both same problem.  have adobe reader 11.0.2.  earlier today able open pdfs in browser tab, evening not much.  not sure changed - knowledge didn't updated today.  have checked settings , can't figure out what's wrong.  i've uninstalled , reinstalled program.  thing couldn't find after extensive googling of issue adobe reader lacks button referenced in lot of posts "display pdf in browser" missing.  i've included screenshot.

in addition, in firefox there used option "use adobe acrobat (in firefox)", there's "use adobe reader (default)" or other pdf readers (and *hate* firefox's pdf reader).  haven't gone deep ie's options since don't use hardly @ all.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
