Text entry box variable not displaying completely

i have learners entering text in teb on 1 slide , capturing variable. want display on slide, first few letters of entered text displaying. made sure there no limit on number of characters in entry box. other settings can check?

when inserting variable in text container, default length 15 characters. while inserting variable can increase width (max 256 characters).

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
