Thread: My Book 3 TB suddenly fails to mount

hey all,

book worked fine on acer aspire 5538g, during file transfer crashed. when attempting reopen, got following error:

error mounting: mount exited exit code 13: $mftmirr not match $mft (record 0). failed mount '/dev/sdc1': input/output error ntfs either inconsistent, or there hardware fault, or it's softraid/fakeraid hardware. in first case run chkdsk /f on windows reboot windows twice. usage of /f parameter important! if device softraid/fakeraid first activate , mount different device under /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). please see 'dmraid' documentation more details.

to on safe side, backed files external hd through windows machine. after reconnected drive ubuntu , have since been getting error:

the windows machine still recognised it, used erase files keep under 2 tb. after reconnecting ubuntu , running dmesg | tail again, got this:

have made worse , there way fix this? don't have enough internal disk space backup while reformatting drive.
also, other hd did backup on through windows in read-only mode in ubuntu - can return write mode without touching files?

appreciate help!
