i contracted root kit on windows xp, called alureon according avast!. had ubuntu live cd luckily had been procrastinating use install ubuntu, booted cd, , backed images, songs, , videos flash drive. afterwards, installed ubuntu cd selecting option use entire disk. think should eliminated , powerless in linux anyway, i'm still little paranoid. did linux installation delete on hard disk (including root kit)? , connecting flash drive , using anti-virus scan files suffice or have worry auto run in windows? don't want happen again, bumping security settings , such.

in case seems pretty unlikely run have survived installation. particular trojan made running in windows. files saved prior installing ubuntu unlikely present risk.

now, malware detected designed harvest credentials things, sure reset passwords web-based services email, chat, , other site have sign into. changes dns settings in order achieve goals apparently, since have installed new os that's no longer relevant.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
