Thread: Ubuntu 11.10 moving from unity and gnome3 to xfce xubuntu

first mention been using ubuntu since 9.10. however, after release 11.04 unity , gnome3 became disappointed. once felt ubuntu pushing ui driven tablets , netbooks. use desktop @ home doing server/admin work. hate have or search programs using forced task bar cannot relocated.
either way since not plan move away ubuntu, because love package manager. decided best bet use different ui. answer pretty simple did searching , found xfce. looks seem real simple gui , turn-out great gnome2. here breakdown ubuntu simplistic gui:
1.backup existing system. home user directory, plus especial /etc/ configs. backup hosts, fstab, , x11 files (i'm using dual monitors , figure out how x play nicely out expanding desktop across).
3.installing compiz + emerald in xubuntu 11.10 xfce becoming popular more , more people migrating away gnome-shell , unity. xfce desktop environment developed high performance , low-end systems, xfce doesn’t include compiz. if want migrate xubuntu , don’t want miss eyecandy provided compiz can follow tutorial. first have install compiz, compiz settings manager , gnome themes, open terminal , paste following command:
code:
apt-get install compiz compiz-plugins-extra compiz-plugins-main compizconfig-settings-manager gnome-themes
4. have install emerald ubuntu repository packages of emerald not working, have download libemeraldengine , emerald chose correct architecture x86 or x64:
http://www.mediafire.com/?0sbu8bd27fca2cu
extract tar , either root or su - install packages:
code:
dpkg -i libemeraldengine0_0.8.8-0ubuntu0~malteworld1_amd64.deb
code:
dpkg -i emerald_0.8.8-0ubuntu0~malteworld1_amd64
code:
dpkg -i emerald-themes_0.2.1-0ubuntu1_all
after installing compiz , emerald go to
code:
menu> settings> settings manager> session , startup> application autostart
and add compiz , emerald in autostart applications list
code:
name: compiz command: compiz --replace ccp
code:
name: emerald command: emerald --replace
after adding emerald , compiz make sure under
code:
menu> settings> settings manager> session , startup> general
