Thread: Western Digital External HDD Error

i'm pretty new ubuntu , have problem connecting 2tb western digital hard drive via usb laptop running ubuntu 11.10. keep getting error message:

error mounting: mount exited exit code 12: failed read last sector (3907027119): invalid argument
hints: either volume raid/ldm wasn't setup yet,
or not setup correctly (e.g. not using mdadm --build ...),
or wrong device tried mounted,
or partition table corrupt (partition smaller ntfs),
or ntfs boot sector corrupt (ntfs size not valid).
failed mount '/dev/sdb1': invalid argument
device '/dev/sdb1' doesn't seem have valid ntfs.
maybe wrong device used? or whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? or other way around?

hard drive contains media , works fine desktop running windows 7. other posts on here regarding wd hdd's recommend formatting drive - there fix allows me keep data?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
