Thread: 11.10: Need help with nvidia driver install from terminal.

hi everyone!

i'm no terminal , need resolve gpu issue have...

run dual-boot ubuntu/winxp , got new graphics card: geforce gt 430.
@ first ran ubuntu 10.04, 2 drivers available jockey nvidia-173 , nvidia-current. nvida-current didn't work decided unistall , upgrade 11.10 (read on forum there different drivers available 11.10). while upgrading presumably using noveau driver.

problem cannot launch x session. if boot login in terminal-mode , if boot recovery-mode terminal root-user. tried install nvidia-current byf ollowing this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...050&postcount=
did cause 10.04 @ least run x-session recoverymode. didn't help.

question 1: when typed line:
code:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-'uname -r'
got response ubuntu unable find 'uname -r'. 'uname -r' stand current kernel i'm running or should command typed says?

question 2: can tell me drivers package need install geforce gt 430? have no way of checking , on forum nvidia-280 or nvidia-290. called plainly so, or nvidia-280.11 / nvidia-290.11?

question 3: when ran nvidia-xconfig got message "a line 8400gs not found." 8400gs gpu used have, seems system still believes have graphics card. issue or should succesfull installation of correct driver gt 430 resolve this?

hope can answers... thanx.

why making difficult when there's x-swat ppa.

- open terminal
- type following command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
- press enter , if required, type password
- type command: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

let install latest stable upstream x.org components
