i have 5 years old dell laptop nvidia video card. have installed on ubuntu 10.04 (unity not supported graphic card).

ide hard disk crashed , have changed new larger ide model. have partitioned , reinstalled ubuntu 10.04, including proprietary nvidia driver.
if installation completed successfully, laptop doesn't boot, i.e. hard disk led gets stuck on , screen stays black, without prompt, can type/see character.

after few changes in grub confiuration read in forums, managed make boot up, in order make boot need press shift after bios, makes grub multi boot menu show up, select first entry. way works 80% of times, going graphic ubuntu boot screen, quick nvidia boot screen , ubuntu environment.

think may related new hard disk? doubt when boots, works out fine. nvidia driver?
suggestions on how fix it? kind of tired having reboot 4-5 times before entering account. thanks!

if manually selecting first grub entry works, , letting grub boot default not, suggest installing grub-customizer , using set first grub entry default.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
