Thread: cannot login to user DE; setuidgid not found

i'm running ubuntu 11.10 , has been working old dell p4.

did number of tweaks cannot remember found instructions. are:

1. adding applications autostart.
1.1 wanted teamviewer start @ boot (rather upon logging in normal user desktop).

1.2 adding login certificate sshd

item 1.2 worked fine following problem developed after rebooted:

cannot log in normal user account. not matter desktop try (i had been using kde.

upon entering user login, briefly various logs flash on screen returns login gui. text disappears fast cannot read of it, last line is:

exec 21: setuidgid: not found

after problem, still able ssh machine user. able login locally root (i had given root password using live cd.)

suspect .profile or other config file scrogged, don't know look. know if user profiles backed can restore previous version.

thought try using live cd reinstall/upgrade kept /home partition , directory intact. used mint 12 live cd , selected "upgrade ubuntu 12" (yes installer said; assume meant mint 12).

incidentally, @ end of intall, reported 'some applications not saved/upgraded"

login problem remains, can no longer ssh machine; guess ssh config overwritten.
