Colouring Shapes for a Newbie

hi all,

 

i'm new here , new illustrator. coming bit of photoshop background, illustrator driving me nuts! problem i'm having colouring shapes i've created using paths. below image created using pen tool:

i know illustrator different way phoptoshop works, thought it'd straight forward fill in shpes i'd created using live paint bucket, it's not been easy colours in original paths rather shapes image below shows:

i want colour in shapes described strokes , not described blue lines. i'm using cs6. have searched net i'm not using right keywords. if point me in right direction, i'd grateful

your open paths have white fills applied. when click livepaint tool, flood-filling pre-existing white fills.

 

illustrator nothing photoshop. need read , work through documentation, or continue drive nuts.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
