OpenGL compliant video cards

this quote last post ("photoshop opens files transparent") in asked needed photoshop work. immediate answer uncheck (edit/preferences/performance) enable opengl. long term answer (see quote) seems to replace graphics card.

i not gamer. looking inexpensive video card support 2-3 monitors (currently running a  nvidia quadro nvs 285 2 dvi monitors , happily running third dvi monitor off motherboard). believe stick nvidia technology.

 

i believe of flatscreen monitors analog (i.e., using vga portion of dvi cable).

 

question #1: do need purchase digital monitors opengl work?

 

when search (www.newegg.com) video cards notice (doing comparison) support "opengl"; "opengl 4.1"; "opengl 4.2"... (each corresponding price increase)

 

question #2: how many opengl versions there , why should concerned?

 

i suspect if go opengl route able find card supports 2 monitors. if continue run third monitor motherboard (display adaptor = intel(r) hd graphics), negate advantage gained video board? in fact, when photoshop complains opengl issues how know display adaptor addressing?

 

question #3: if run 2 monitors off opengl compliant video card , monitor off video card may not opengl compliant can still benefits of opengl?

re: 1.) opengl has nothing monitors.

 

re: 2.) current "gold standard" in 3d applications still opengl 2.1 viewport display. of them use opengl 3.0 , specific features maya's "viewport 2.0" higher. @ point i'm not aware professional app permanently uses opengl 4.0, of course 1 year down road may. in case, it's moot point. merely driver thing, not actualyl hardware problem. long vendors keep updating drivers, should able use current opengl versions.

 

re: 3.) yes/ no/ maybe/ knows? won't know until @ point. default, application programs on system use first available graphics adapter draw windows , stuff. incompatible adapters may indeed impair behavior , disable hardware acceleration features. generalyl stuff built around "greedy", exclusive model. eitehr works , avialable or isn't. there no such thing "just bit pregnat", if meaning. generalyl grphics hardware fall lower opengl levels if unable not support features, doesn't if ps e.g. still wants specifc opengl 2.1 shader 3d preview, hence these features still not available in ps.
