Thread: Jumped right in....complete noob

ok, have windows on 3 laptops @ house, , kids have 2 mbps school. laptops belonging wife , kids virus magnets. have been hearing linux , decided last night make leap. installed ubuntu 11.10. have problems.

1. installed openoffice 3.3, cannot figure out how going. college student , use word lot. excel junkie.

2. mouse jumps when hover on close button or try copy , paste something.

3. finally, got linux, supposed it? there guides written this?

have spent several hours reading forums , posts solve these problems. have been working on windows since 1994. have torn few apart , replaced parts needed. have built few basic web pages in html. not complete computer idiot. not know go here. know guys lot of questions, appreciate if point me in right direction. have been wanting make jump linux while, felt bit intimidated.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
