Thread: Minimal install with a fully functioning desktop

hello,

here tried many times , came here help.

objective: install ubuntu (or few other flavors) minimal footprint , flab. virtualbox guest.

summary:
virtualbox v4.1.8
host: mac os x lion
guest: ubuntu 11.10 32-bit

here did already:

installed base system , rebooted. did number of different combinations of manual installs of other packages. never did succeed functioning desktop. think got there once lack of functionality unity threw me off or tired.

what need:

do after base system install functioning desktop (preferably ubuntu, open xfce)?
dont need calendar, im, unity, office, graphics utils, etc.

need terminal, pdf viewer (evince or related), chrome, , vb guest utilities.

thank help.

bonus question: should leave vb guest package installs oneiric or should install version comes vb? using vb v4.1.8

regarding guest additions, have used "install guest additions" feature of virtualbox itself.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
