Thread: Ubuntu / Windows 7 - strange NTFS issue
before describe problem, think wise describe setup. have desktop running ubuntu 11.10 only, , laptop dual-booted ubuntu 11.10 , windows 7. laptop has 640gb hard drive majority being given windows 7 partition, , ubuntu has, well, less 50gb anyway. have pertinent directories in ubuntu home dir (documents, music, etc.) mount-bound corresponding directories in windows 7 user dir. example, in fstab (i'm in windows right don't have access fstab copy , paste from) /home/tralce/documents bound /media/windows7/users/tralce/documents , files stored in windows partition. altogether it's around 100gb of data on 100,000 files. use unison under ubuntu mirror these pertinent home dirs on laptop desktop counterparts. years has worked wonderfully.
here's gets weird: every , again, , more lately, files... well, change. keep home dir sorted, text files under documents, , videos under videos. but, here's example, went open small file in ~/documents, called packages, contained short list of packages install on fresh ubuntu installation, , had turned copy of fellowship of ring. movie. on both laptop , desktop, , in both windows , linux. still called packages.
happens lot, , i'm losing valuable files way.
under windows i've run chkdsk /f c: , corrects few files starting fail. plaintext file turn empty directory of same name.
please...
i going venture guess 1 or more of data storage units has become corrupted, more convoluted file-management system (or has become) finer chance of happening somewhere along way.
@ point, more start backing important onto brand new media.
writeable dvd's hold quite bit of data, example, i'd thinking in terms of of sort.
reason writeable discs (cd's / dvd's) because once written more difficult data become corrupted.
yup, yup.
have heard before...
can not...
rule, transfer files between linux , windows , synchronization , , forth that.
technically, should work.
myself use 8gb usb drive files wish share yourself, thing gets hiccups.
part caught attention...
if install requires 100gb of files i'm giving 100+gb partition (and not, no offense, 50gb smoke , mirrors)
if have 640gb's i'd give linux room needs, 150!
maybe 200...
know, there might way can re-partition without losing file or maybe run virus / spyware tests well
think going have simplify file management system.
hope helps
