Why can't I update a table of contents in Windows InDesign CS 5.5?

i have clicked in table of contents frame, on layout menu, "udpate table of contents" grayed out.

 

i have "moved" table of contents indesign doc created weeks ago new doc. can update in old doc, when it's copied new doc, update option no longer available.

 

why can't updated once it's in doc can use toc styles & layouts rather having redefine on again?

a toc toc special properties while inthe original location. can't copy/paste.

 

you can, however, create toc style , load inthe new file, make new toc there.
