error message: can't create type (with type on a path tool)

i want create text on circle path, drew circle, went "type on path tool" , clicked on circle. keep getting message "can't create type". have tried use direct selection tool select circle first , without direct selection. don't know doing wrong. sugestions?

you must not doing wrong. of these errors boil down having "bad" font on system, check if added potentialyl crappy fonts freeware typefaces , remove them. of course check text panels , reset settings, too.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
