Thread: apt-get returning exit status 127 when trying to do upgrade

when tried upgrade on packages, aborted mid-way , got error:
code:
setting initscripts (2.88dsf-13.10ubuntu4.1) ...  /var/lib/dpkg/info/initscripts.postinst: 169: update-rc.d: not found  dpkg: error processing initscripts (--configure):   subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127  errors encountered while processing:   initscripts  e: sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code (1)
i've searched on google , have gotten no relavant results. closest 1 find old archive 2008 did not help.

now, if try install package, same error. else getting error today?

from version version attempt upgrade or want update packages within release, e.g. 11.10?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
