Thread: high memory usage

freezing pc. run 4 workspaces, each instance of firefox. have new motherboard, minimal memory. i've ordered 4gb of ddr2 memory, need until arrives in week. i'm looking tutorials/advice on tweaking memory (handling cache, buffers, etc).

amd phenom 9750 quad core
740.5 gb memory
250 gb primary hd
10 gb secondary hd

screenshot attached. after screenshot, closed (2 instances of firefox) system manager, , still using 99.9% of swap memory, , 60% "memory" (and understanding of how work fuzzy).

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
