Thread: HOW TO - Change the log-in screen background in 11.10

hello,

returned ubuntu after few years in windows 7 due requirements of of programming classes had take @ university. in case, upon returning , installing newest version saddened log-in screen mandated ubuntu creators (no offense ubuntu creators). after doing searching found no 1 looking (including here) had worthwhile suggestions. maybe overlooked post thought worthwhile tell may want make such change how done. , sake of simplicity code follows assuming image wish use log-in screen stored in /home/<username>/pictures folder (if image not in folder, change directory folder contain image have log-in screen). need root privileges make change. 1 more thing before start, image wish replace current log-in screen need png (portable network graphics) formatted image.
start opening new terminal window [ctrl+alt+t]. enter following commands terminal window (the [code] prompts not entered, mark beginning , ends of lines of code, , <username> section enter name logged system as).

[code]
cd /usr/share/backgrounds
sudo rm -r warty-ubuntu-final.png
cd /home/<username>/pictures
sudo cp warty-ubuntu-final.png /usr/share/backgrounds
[code]

pretty straight-forward, once have image want change log-in window selected , re-named warty-final-ubuntu.png . if not have images in png format can change them png opening them in gimp image editing software, , save image png image. if not have image use log-in screen, have attached zip file containing 2 images created , have log-in screens on desktop , laptop. 1 1920x1080, other 1366x768. penguin in image , gun holding not of creation, found them , put them together, , made penguin realistically holding weapon. else had done before didn't appeal me. put on larger background , made suitable log-in window background. let me know if have questions, or if images supplied not in format can use (they both widescreen formatted images).
