Thread: Can't boot ubuntu! Need to take backup.

i had ubuntu 10.10 installed inside windows. working smooth last 1 year. tried install packages related customization , after not @ booting. after loader menu if select windows, goes fine. after selecting ubuntu, drops me grub shell.
have critical information in home directory. can re-install ubuntu want data back. windows file system if go ubuntu install directory , try access disks directory there, says directory corrupt. how can data back?? please help...

as wubi install, whole linux installed inside virtual drive, windows big file containg rubbish @ time.

recover data windows not likely.
installing ubuntu again way (wubi) create new such 'disk' , lost anyway.

there might ways repair grub make booting current version again, tried number of times , never succeeded on wubi install, thought have not done wubi time now.

on other hand, giving grub shell not bad either, worse.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
