Thread: Online Backup Services
i trying pick out online backup service. standards are: 100 gb of storage, price $3 - $10 per month, robust servers, works linux. don't care if nuts-and-bolts rsync type or proprietary software type of interface, although rsync "good enough" me. don't care file syncing across computers (i use ubuntu 1 that, thread offsite backup in case of disaster) cost isn't consideration - i'd pay more more robust solution.
i'd site "robust" - i.e. fault tolerant, stuff doesn't dissappear when stuff loses computer/drive/utility grid/etc.
i'd reasonable level of security
here brief bit of research:
ubuntu 1
cost 100 gb: 20 gb $30/year 100 gb = $150/yr
robust? - poor? ubuntu 1 website not address afaik. wikipedia reports ubuntu 1 not stored on peer-to-peer network.
security - medium. files stored unencrypted
interface: proprietary gui
around since: 2009
spideroak
cost 100 gb: $100/yr
robust: extremely. https://spideroak.com/engineering_matters#fault_tolerant
security - high https://spideroak.com/engineering_matters#true_privacy
interface: proprietary gui
around since: 2007
dropbox
cost: 100gb: $240
robust: ? wikipedia lists "partial" encryption - can't find info on fault tolerance.
presumed high since leading brand?
security - concerns: , more concerns
interface: proprietary gui
around since: 2008
datastorageunit.com
cost: 100gb: $50/yr
robust: apparently 1 server running raid 50, possibly
1 man show
security: depends on how set rsync
interface: rsync (nuts , bolts)
around since: ?
right now, spideroak seems winning price/value war, high security , medium price.
other contenders you'd recommend? can add information in these 5 categories - cost, robustness, security, interface, around since?
