Thread: Removing a server from (most of) the internet?
using new year excuse, got around re-tuning home server running 10.04.3. while serves many important functions on own home network, realized needs have little interaction real, outside internet. needs connect ubuntu server security updates, email provider download new emails (for archiving purposes, live without if made harder), , that's it.
in light of this, , in interest of securing bit more, wondering if there way implement sort of internet whitelist on server. unless (out of network) site on whitelist, not connect or accept connections.
question twofold. 1) have impact on security of server, or deluding myself, , 2) possible? in case relevant, i'm running unmodded linksys wrt router.
thanks.
you use ip tables whitelist connections. sure not block essentials dns , icmp.
merits of such endeavor less certain. i'd there's little return on effort except maybe learning exercise. ubuntu secure out of box , if services need firewall should not on net begin with.
