Illustrator prefs v. com.adobe.illustrator.plist?

in past, when ai started acting trash prefs solve problem, meaning throw out 2 prefs files: adobe illustrator prefs, in "settings" folder in preferences folder, plus com.adobe.illustrator.plist, further down list. now, cs6, if that, throw out workspace settings bathwater (and lot more settings i'm not aware of ), don't want do. new. why? in each of thsoe preference files, , why there 2 of them, , why have  contents been changed include workspace settings? in terms of priority, annoyance rather emergency, 1 take me time repair.

the ilustrator prefs holds settings configure in preferences accesed cmd k.

 

the .plist file stores other settings related plug ins , tracks info on files opened in past. can open either file in text editor more info. 

 

some rumors claim information on each , every file ever opened stored in .plist, find untrue (see below), thought there old references whcih need not there. .plist file on few occasions gets out of control , "com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist". if see these files mb, signal that. illustrator .plist file below comparison
