I just realized something rather disturbing.

you have decide format , whatnot sequence... when export video file, still have pick kinds of settings, including format. point of selecting format twice this? might have simple , logical answer, came think other day when biking, , couldn't answer myself.

when select sequence settings match source material makes editing software happy because dealing source material if " knows " is, how handle it.. specs etc.. when add transitions , cuts , stuff editor job.

after you're done editing there may number of "platforms" or " pipelines" or "products" want make. example, maybe want broadcast on tv. maybe want save can go other "step" in process ( color grading or sfx ) maybe want webcast it... of things want edited footage best served different export settings.

 

when on bike on level ground @ constant speed you'd in gear , exerting constant pressure legs maintain desired speed. that's when , bike happy. source material, bike editor...both working purpose...

then encounter hill or something... , change gears , pressure etc accomadate change. that's export... export purpose...

 

stupid analogy maybe sorta might make sense ?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
