Issues with Refine Edge adjustments

using cs5, win, 64bit, bamboo tablet.

i'm working on hair & after making selection, open refine edge tool & selected brush tweak selection. when attempt paint in area or paint out area selection disappears right after make it. including 2 photos in attempt demonstrate what's going on.  1st screen shot may not show settings in place listed below. 2nd image shows area selected additional refinment.  cannot shown took place after selection made but, selection disappears! 3rd image shows results.  not doing right, advise/recommendations?

 

view mode - overlay

edge detection - none (no smart radius)

adjust edge - setting vary

out put - none selected

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
