thumbnails disappear into torn page icon

when open photoshop elements 11 thumbnails displayed turn hourglass , disappear , turn torn/ripped/broken page/photo icon.. have tried refreshing, updating thumbnail, repairing cache, erasing cache, unistalling , reinstalling.. tried import same folder of photos on tw different computers , had same problem.  also, can see humbnails in windows explorer know files not corrupt or damaged.capture ps elements.png

please select files > right click , update thumbnails.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
