Thread: Any way to virtualize Win 7 from a preinstalled PC?

hello,

bought laptop win 7 preinstalled, , want backup win 7, format hdd, install linux, install backed win 7 image virtualized guest (probably virtualbox, maybe vmware).

appears several threads i've found via googling not possible using oem's system recovery discs (hp), nor using windows recovery disc created recdisc.exe. possible using other method, perhaps cloning drive clonezilla?

if not, what's best option getting copy of win 7 (64bit, @ least home premium or better) virtualized guest installation on linux? full, non-oem, win 7 installation dvd option?

thanks!

the problem if clone installed os , deploy vm, windows still using old hardware configuration. since vm, hardware shown windows totally different. think installation in vm can use install media. difference between oem , retail versions oem don't have kind of support microsoft, thats why cheaper.
