Thread: Black screen when restarting computer

when restart computer, , instead of directly loading ubuntu, black screen says:

ubuntu 10.04 lts xxxxxxxx-pc tty1

xxxxxxxxxx-pc desktop login:

there way log in screen, or have wait release ubuntu load? stays on screen 1 minute.

what after minute, shut down again, or boot usual?
otherwise, can log in, without graphical interface. once you've logged in, might able try command "startx" (perhaps "sudo startx") graphics running properly. worked once me.
said, symptoms not normal, , suggest installation problem, problem graphics card recognition or perhaps, if machine boots after minute, quirky grub configuration, i'm guessing bit!

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
