Thread: Can't open text file


hi all,

have messed system , want reinstall ubuntu, when transfer files usb device text files not open, says character encoding, cant access file.

when type command:

file filename.txt,

tells me file binary file though know used default character code gedit (utf- 8

have tried using gvim, geany, nano, vim access file still no no.

no can't reinstall ubuntu cos fies seem can't accessed.

there way access files, mean anyway, cos have work stored need . mean next rent , meals depend on these text files.

advise please

what does

code:
cat filename.txt
give you?

if can read output, can redirect new file with

code:
cat filename.txt > newfile.txt
