Thread: display crash? computer unresponsive

i typically leave computer on overnight, turning off peripherals (monitor, speakers, etc.). when went turn on monitor morning, monitor turned on, blank, i.e., power on, acting had no input computer. tried moving mouse , using keyboard -- nothing. checked vga cable, wasn't problem either. computer still running, used laptop check shared folders on it, , couldn't connect them. after figured must have partially shut down or something, used magic sysrq key reboot. after fine, wondering if has ideas happened? other strategies should have tried rather rebooting? figure it's not display issue since couldn't connect shared folders, i'm running windows network that's not reliable, it's possible computer running , connected network , windows laptop having problems connecting, i'm still not sure whether merely display issue or if whole system shut down computer still running. thoughts or advice on how deal issue if happens again appreciated.

did try ping computer? more reliable trying more advanced network sharing stuff?
did hear noise machine or lights on? if not, computer may have gone in sleep mode. since shuts down peripherals, not easy wake desktop computer. on laptop, open lid, doesn't work on desktop machine. check power management settings , make sure won't go suspend or hibernate.
