Thread: Installing from source vs installing from the USC

when should 1 rely on ubuntu software center , when should 1 install tarballs (e.g., source)? 1 can find more up-to-date versions available in usc. opinions?

basically, boils down to: really need "up-to-date" version? remember fixes critical bugs (including not limited security-related ones) are applied version in ubuntu repositories, if version number not reflect it. reason why want install source when need feature present in newer version (and can't find third-party repository has it).

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
