How do I fix a double exposure?

i have photos took years ago, , took more, on same film, not realizing had photos on frames, resulting in double exposures.  want keep both sets of photos - 2 different locations, light scenes, darker, of people , objects.  how can best correct these?  have adobe pkhotoshop elements 9, believe is.

a double exposure flattened layered composite single raster layer.  not easy task separate composite 2 separate layers , not going find general solution solution depend on double exposure contents , willing bet  difficult maybe impossible separate.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
