Synchronize folder does not fully import any longer

i typically use lr4 (currently 4.4) scan folder using "synchronize folder".  have been doing months, , worked advertised, adding new photos , removing deleted ones.

 

however, lately after scan, , dialog correctly states number of new photos, after import completes fraction of images have imported.  need repeat process them all.

 

this makes no sense.

 

in other words:

-- add 25 jpg files folder

-- select folder in lr library , choose "synchronize folder"

-- dialog says 25 new images, click "synchronize" button

-- after progress completes, there 7 photos added

 

any ideas?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
