Thread: 11.04 Crashes at random - Need help with troubleshooting please

i have ubuntu 11.04 on dell inspiron 530. i've had machine several years , it's worked flawlessly entire time.

the changes i've made listed below:

few years ago added memory, came 2gb , has 4gb. on 2 years ago , it's been running fine since on memory. let memory check run on 3 hours , came no problems. don't think that's problem.

few years ago added different video card, , it's run flawless on that. don't think that's problem.

9-10 months ago, reloaded machine after installing crucial ssd hard drive. it's been working fine, , machine runs fast it. so, i'm not sure that's issue... suppose since it's last thing changed.


symptom:
when: @ random, machine on me not using @ or while i'm using it.
what: total lockup, stops responding ping , everything. blank screen. hdd light on computer typically solid lit , fans running higher normal, although not full blast.

what i've done:
run memory check, seems fine.. let run several hours no bad results.

suggestions on try next? i'd hate have replace machine, works great me! when it's working...

so, if discount lack of ram , ram failure , overheating, else be?

using system resources. guessing hard disk activity due data being paged in , out of swap space. should rare 2gb of ram let alone 4gb. so, thinking working crazy on machine using cpu , filling ram.

know of 2 ways check this. open system monitor , watch resources tab. , run command called top. both these ways work in real time. show processes running , how of system using.

others on forum might have other suggestions.
