Thread: Installing 32 bit LTS Lucic on 2nd HDD 2nd primary partition
i new , have 2 related enquiries,i start second thread 64 bit question 2 related mention them both here.
1. question & thread: installing 32 bit lts lucid on 2nd hdd 2nd primary partition
2. thread follow: installing lucid 64 bit on lucid 32 bit on laptop partition
question
how go installing 32 bit lucid 2nd hdd on windows xp desktop, installing after primary partition wiindows use.
my system & thoughts
must help.
lot easier me ask question of has aquired knowledge trying information myself, miss out on in hindsight obvious.
rather rambling gives idea of current intentions , reasoning, of may of course flawed.
older pc failing main hdd, windows xp, wish keep, second newish drive available installing ubuntu on, , prefer install in second partition on drive. trying not spend money on it, have been swapping components other systems.
- hdd: windows drive failing evidenced s.m.a.r.t reports. 32bit fat 160gb drive
- 2nd hdd: 1 have not yet installed 500gb (need cable yet in order install it)
- usb1: available, usb1 not unable boot usb sticks, slow purposes. external hdd available limited usb1. (version one)
- cd: have cd.rw drive, rather unreliable in booting ubuntu that.
- ram: ram max allowable 1gb, of used on integrated graphics
- cpu: amd athlon single core
- bios: allow boot 2nd internal hdd, not boot usb.
have already
- made , integrity checked lucid cds 32 bit desktop,
( , 64 bit desktop , alternative install 64 bit)- installed lucid on laptop (see other question)
- time come try have 2nd hdd installed, , if necessary formatted , partitioned
ubuntu install easy options dismissed
install in 1st primary partition, of prospective 2nd hdd using desktop live cd, prefer not that, think windows install have in 1st primary partition.
install alongside current window os non starter
- space going limited, , have loads elsewhere
- hdd may fail soon
me
newbie linux. have forgotten lot unix, dos, & cobol, basic @ 1 line per punched card! not totally new computers. prefer avoid unnecessary use of cli, slow looking , trying remember required commands , syntax.
not know modern partitioning & file systems, note lucid installed on ext4.
intend learn using terminal emulator, , have played around on it.
windows
wish keep windows. leave now. curently backed using norton (norton ghost 14 ). using ng14 on system grub apparently known issue, (i think ng14 recovery may rewrite mbr).
may have reconsider backup options, presumably can discover methods of making , restoring disk images. has sort of hidden partition recovery system, looses changes , additions have made. no if/when hdd fails.
(kosher oem install on original machine, @ stage may able plead ms installing on replacement drive or partition repair solution - replacement windows os pointless on machine of age/value)
@ present if no other option, unpluging additional drive , using recovery cd current hdd can restored factory style default. programs , personal documents etc may restored whatever backups have. easier using ng14. once ubuntu installed , working can rethink strategies.
(in separate thread follow
next q re:
lucid 64 bit on lucid 32 bit on laptop partition
recent laptop, windows 7 installed on primary mbr ntfs
single internal 750gb hdd, usb connectors, , internal cd/drd rewriter
lucid 32 bit installed , working on 2nd partition
)
oops
typo in title says lucic not lucid !
appears title may not edited poster.
any install second drive or external drive should partitioned in advance , use manual install or else choose partitions use what.

standard suggestion partitioning, can vary lot depending on what or need.
total space want ubuntu:
ubuntu's standard install / (root) & swap, better add partition /home:
1. 10-25 gb mountpoint / primary or logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
2. 2 gb mountpoint /home logical beginning ext4(or ext3)
3. 2 gb mountpoint swap logical
depending on how memory have may not absolutely need swap having still recommended. not hibernate (boots fast enough me) if hibernating need swap equal ram in gib not gb. , if dual booting windows shared ntfs partition recommended. cannot create part of install, leave space. or partition in advance (recommended).
1 advantage of partitioning in advance installer use swap space speed install. herman tip.
