has evaluated cpu , ram usage required on ubuntu server if software raid enabled? want understand how processing power loose per server if use software raid instead of hardware raid.

mdadm have little impact in terms of cpu / ram use except when it's doing re-sync. modern cpu's have no problem handling parity calculations raid array.

main difference you'll see vs. hardware array lack of write cache, it's writes not typically fast hardware controller. on older amd 240e processor 2gb of ram, still saturate gigabit connection ( 8 ) disk raid6 array.

hardware raid typically faster, locked hardware, , cost entry higher free price of mdadm.
