Thread: Ubuntu 11.10: Unbreakable GDM

i have worked xorg , older versions of ubuntu before. easy stop xorg running. seems in ubuntu 11.10 literally impossible. have googled topic furiously hours trying sorts of logical methods tell xorg stop running nothing seems work.

reason need tell stop running because trying install new graphics card different brand (radeon nvidia) , apparently ubuntu refuses boot desktop new card long enough me deal driver. when did manage switch console new card, proprietary nvidia drivers refuse install while x running.

need break xorg long enough me installation , revert when done. ideas? remember, tried everything.

sudo stop lightgdm

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
